Our Therapy for Children in South Shields and the North East

At The Harton Practice, we are proud to offer child counselling and therapy services for children and adolescents, as well as support for parents.

Our team of trained professionals provide tailored interventions, including psychological assessments, trauma support, and specialist therapies like EMDR, with a flexible, needs-based approach. Our work aims to reduce distress, improve emotional regulation, strengthen resilience, and foster healthy family relationships and connections. We support neurodivergent children and those experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties, ensuring therapy is child-centred and engaging.

  • Costs vary depending on the type of therapy best suited to your child. At The Harton Practice, we aim to keep sessions accessible and offer flexible options. Contact us to discuss pricing, packages, or child and parent therapy sessions.

  • Engaging a resistant child involves creating a safe, supportive, environment, using age-appropriate techniques. Our therapists are experienced in building trust and adapting approaches to suit each child’s comfort level.

  • This depends very much on what the perceived difficulties are. ADHD is not a mental health disorder, it is a neurodevelopmental condition and shapes how people regulate their emotions, impulses and activity and attention levels. Some children might struggle with executive functioning - and so some therapies can assist with planning tools for organisation and emotional regulation. With children, a systemic approach involving how the wider family approach the child’s difficulties can be helpful.

  • Going to therapy can be daunting for a child and its important to try and use language that doesn’t put a responsibility on them for making changes. Often, families who might be at a loss as to why their child is struggling or has shut down can unintentionally make their child feel that they need ‘fixing’. Encouraging your child that therapy is a safe space for them to talk about their worries and make sense of them, talking only about what they want to can be a way that can make them feel more confortable. Some therapies- like art therapy- don’t directly focus on traditional ‘talk therapies’ and are often able to engage a child creatively.

  • Child trauma therapy helps children make sense of scary or upsetting experiences so those memories don’t feel so overwhelming. It uses talking, play or creative activities to help them feel safe, understood, and able to heal.

  • At The Harton Practice, we offer child therapy near you in South Shields and across the North East, with both in-person and online options. Our child therapists provide individualised support tailored to each child and family.
