Meet Kieran McIvor: Addiction Therapist and Recovery Coach
Kieran is a well respected Drug and Alcohol Specialist Nurse with over 20 years of experience working in health care in the NHS. As a qualified and accredited professional with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Kieran now provides support as an addiction therapist and recovery coach, helping individuals and families manage alcohol and drug use with care and understanding.
Aside from his core qualifications, Kieran is trained in Dual Diagnosis, meaning he can confidently assess and work with mental health and co-occuring substance misuse. He is passionate about early intervention and alcohol recovery coaching, supporting individuals and their families around alcohol use and the impact that this can have even at a level that would not meet the threshold for addiction.
Kieran believes that stigma can prevent people reaching out for support when it is needed with addiction services, and promotes early intervention and reduction planning. Both of these can be influential in stabilising alcohol or substance misuse, and will work together with you using a range of interventions in a confidential way.
-
An addiction therapist is a trained professional who helps individuals understand and change behaviours related to substance use.
-
Recovery coaching is a specialised form of support that helps individuals overcome substance dependency and maintain long-term sobriety. Unlike traditional therapy, it focuses on practical strategies, goal-setting, and personalised guidance rather than clinical treatment.
-
A good recovery coach empowers individuals to take charge of their recovery through practical, goal-focused support. They help identify triggers, build coping strategies, and encourage lasting lifestyle changes. By fostering accountability and motivation, a great recovery coach provides ongoing, non-judgmental support to sustain long-term sobriety.
